What to Expect at Your First Trichology Consultation in Meridian
Booking your first hair loss appointment can feel intimidating, especially if you're not sure what's actually going to happen or whether your concern is "serious enough" to address. Here's exactly what to expect at a first trichology consultation at Copper Hair Co., so you can walk in feeling prepared instead of anxious.
Before Your Appointment
You don't need to do anything special to prepare, but a few things can help:
Come with clean, dry hair so we get the clearest possible view of your scalp during the exam
You'll receive an in-depth questionnaire to fill out before your visit, so we can dig into your history ahead of time
Come alone if you can. The space is intimate, with no extra seating for guests who aren't receiving services
Think through your timeline — when you first noticed changes, anything that happened around that time (illness, stress, medication changes, postpartum, weight changes), and whether shedding is increasing, stable, or improving
During the Consultation
1. In-depth questionnaire. This covers your health history, family history of hair loss, medications, diet, stress levels, and styling habits — all of which can play a role in what's happening with your hair.
2. Scalp and hair analysis. Using both macro and micro photography, we get a close, detailed look at your scalp and individual follicles — far beyond what's visible to the naked eye. I use an AI-based scope to capture a proper baseline of your scalp and follicles, so we have an objective starting point we can track and compare against as treatment progresses. This lets us assess things like follicle density, miniaturization, inflammation, scaling, or scarring that wouldn't otherwise be obvious.
3. Discussion of what's likely going on. Based on your history and the scalp analysis, we talk through what pattern of hair loss or scalp condition is most likely present — whether that's something like telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, an inflammatory or scarring condition, or something else entirely.
4. Treatment and next-step recommendations. This might include in-clinic treatments (like TED Hair Restoration, Cold Atmospheric Plasma, or Juvasonic), at-home product recommendations, further testing (like epigenetic hair strand analysis or DNA testing), or in some cases a referral for additional medical evaluation.
What We're Looking For
A first consultation isn't about confirming "yes, you're losing your hair" — you already know that. It's about understanding the why, because the right treatment depends entirely on the underlying cause. Hair loss from a hormonal shift looks different under the scope than hair loss from chronic scalp inflammation, and they call for different approaches.
Honest Expectations
I believe in setting realistic expectations from the very first visit, not overpromising. Some things worth knowing going in:
Results take time. Most clients see initial improvement in 2–3 months, with fuller results around 6–12 months, because hair growth cycles simply move on that timeline — no treatment can speed up biology.
Not every type of hair loss responds the same way. Conditions like scarring alopecia have different, more limited expectations than non-scarring thinning, and I'll be upfront about that from the start.
Consistency matters more than intensity. A realistic, sustainable plan you'll actually stick with outperforms an aggressive plan you abandon after a month.
After Your Consultation
You'll leave with a clear picture of what's happening with your scalp, a recommended treatment plan tailored to your specific findings, and an understanding of the realistic timeline for results. There's no pressure to commit to anything on the spot — this visit is about information and a plan, first and foremost.
